You use it when the bikes hot, say if you come off or stall it and you need to restart the bike. Simply pull in the hot start lever and kick the bike.
Some one may be able to tell you a technique on how to get it started every time when the bikes hot, I can't remember what it was though..
Hope that helps.

Pull the hot start lever in
Push down on the kick start slowly, fully down
Release kickstart then hot start
give it a good boot.

Another to do if you bin it .....

Turn fuel off and lean bike over till fuel spills, then just do what you normally do to start the bike.

You'll find different makes of bikes have there own little quirks

and....different bikes of the exact same model react differently too.
i was at an enduro and could get my wr250f to start. some guy could see me trying and noticed i had throttle slightly open, he tried telling me NOT to open throttle, he wouldnt have it that it was my bike and i knew exactly how to get it started.
i got it going eventually, with throttle open!
